Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan Movie Review: Blindingly Bland

Blindingly Bland

Shanaya Kapoor makes her debut as Saba Shergill, a blindfolded actress, with Vikrant Massey as Jahan. Does their chemistry work in a comic love story that’s also promoted as a musical? Here’s our review.

Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan Movie Critic Review:

Cough, cough. Saba Shergill (Shanaya Kapoor) has blindfolded herself on the train to Mussoorie to prep for an audition to play a visually challenged girl. For no apparent reason, Jahan (Vikrant Massey) gets a slap from her as an introduction. But, cough, cough, he’s a musician, he should understand another artiste.

The cough disappears, inexplicably.

She’s stranded in Mussoorie, inexplicably.

She clings to the stranger on the train, inexplicably. Even moves into his hotel room.

“Come, I’ll show you around my house,” he says, inexplicably. When did a hotel room turn into a house?

Jahan has an assistant-cum-driver, a general factotum. Who talks of a chidiya (sparrow) that talks (everybody laugh, Saba and Jahan do) and tells them a ghost story (everybody shiver, Saba and Jahan do, she even moves into his bed).

Jahan doesn’t tell Saba that he’s been visually impaired since a car accident took his parents’ lives. Inexplicably.

There’s comedy – he climbs a ladder (why?), his towel falls off (why?), she threatens to yank off her blindfold and look at him (why?), he finally falls, lands on her (now we know why).

They’ve both fallen. In love.

Soon it’s Valentine’s Day.

Breakup and makeup years later.

It does seem like years with writer-director Santosh Singh’s tedious storytelling, unaided by co-writers Mansi Bagla and Niranjan Iyengar, as the train to Mussoorie finally chugs into a station “somewhere in Europe” for the climactic smooch and makeup. With cycling, biryani dinners and spiked drinks sprinkled on the way. Also screeches and more slaps.

Why she couldn’t have called him on the mobile instead of the traditional chase to the railway station is as inexplicable as the rest of the movie.

Somewhere in between, new boyfriend Abhinav (Zain Khan Durrani) also steps in. Understanding and unreasonable in turns.

The dialogues are so full of profundities that a few good ones, like Jahan asking Saba, “Just because I’m a musician, am I supposed to scream in an alaap?” go unnoticed. From verbosity on either side of the door before they finally make love to a long monologue even during the climax on the platform, it’s heavy going.

It could’ve been at least a great musical like Aashiqui. But from the credit titles that have lyrics about a ‘safar’ to annoying BG (like grating sounds while the general factotum speaks), Vishal Mishra’s album is not captivating.

Vikrant Massey is unable to shoulder the film like a hero. Shanaya Kapoor has a glowing skin and makes a confident debut.

Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan Watch Or Not?: Blindfolded or with eyes wide open, falling in love with this romance will be tough.
