Imtiaz Ali talks about directing 'Jab Harry Met Sejal' immediately after 'Tamasha', says ''it's a kind of film where you don't have to think too much''.

‘Imtiaz Ali’ is one of the most critically acclaimed and celebrated directors in the ‘Hindi Film Industry’. With a unique sense of story telling and music, his films create magic on the silver screen and in turn are a delight to be watched. From ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Love Aajkal’ to ‘Rockstar’ all these creations are regarded as classic cults and are talked about till date. These movies have also proven to smash records on the box office and were awarded at eminent award ceremonies like ‘Filmfare’ and ‘IIFA’.

Imtiaz’s film ‘Tamasha’ is credited to be an extraordinary example of ‘out of the box cinema’ with a deep message revolving around each persons life and career choices, garnished by ‘Ranbir Kapoor’ and ‘Deepika Padukone’s’ tremendous performances the movie catered a selected segment of audiences . While ‘Ali’s’ immediate next release ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ starring ‘Shah Rukh Khan’ and ‘Anushka Sharma’ was a sweet and simple ‘Love Tale’ which couldn’t find it’s way in Audiences heart.

Recently in an interaction with Roshan Abbas on his ‘Stumble Podcast’ The director expresses about his Transition between both the films ‘Tamasha’ and ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’, Imtiaz Said “After Tamasha, people started taking me very seriously. There was this idea that, ‘Tujhe nahi samajh aayi Tamasha kyunki tu akalmand nahi hai (You didn’t understand the film because you aren’t intelligent)’, I felt like My film is being discussed in a club where I wouldn’t find admittance and I didn’t want to be that kind of director. So, I decided to make a movie that’s not at all intellectual”.

He mentioned that he wanted to make an ‘ordinary film’ as people were viewing his image as that of a serious director, “I wanted to make an ordinary film. Every film that you make, you are attached to it, but I wanted to make ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ during that time because it’s a kind of film where you don’t have to think too much, a film that would make people say, ‘Imtiaz Ali, who made Tamasha, can also make a movie like this’. I felt it could have been a fresh concept, and I could’ve have done better. However in hindsight, I could have improved many things in my work”.

On the work front, the Rockstar director is shooting for his next autobiography based on Punjabi singer ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’s’ life journey. The film stars popstar ‘Diljit Dosanjh’ in the main lead and is slated to release in 2024 on OTT giant ‘Netflix’.
