The Joke That Earned Him A Slap; Chris Rock’s ‘G.I. Jane’ Joke EXPLAINED

The Oscars 2022 witnessed a never-seen-before drama this year, with Will Smith smacking host Chris Rock was an unexpected slap. But what was the fuss all about? Read to know!

Will Smith at the Oscars 2022 did the unexpected, his random smacking of Chris Rock on his face was totally out of the blue and left not just the viewers but the other celebrities in shock. As social media is trying as hard as possible to debunk the mystery behind Chris Rock’s joke, a reference to Smith’s wife, Pinkett Smith, here’s a bit of insight into the entire drama for you if this got you too, scratching your head in confusion.

When Chris Rock made a slyly sarcastic reference to Jada Pinkett Smith’s appearance, he clearly wasn’t expecting Will Smith to get this offended, to an extent, that he’d actually smack him back as a response. If you’ve already seen the viral video, you can hear Chris say, ”Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it” clearly making a sly reference at Jada’s appearance. While husband Smith’s initial response to the joke was to laugh it off, he suddenly went on stage and slapped Chris for intending a joke towards his wife. “Will Smith just smacked the sh** out of e” said Chris as Smith was seen mouthing “ Keep my wife’s name out of your fu mouth” although this part was censored.

But what’s the fuss about? Why was Smith unable to welcome the joke in a light sense? Well, the word ‘G.I. Jane’ refers to the number of female armed forces in the US. it’s a famous analogy for a tough female who is aggressive and strong and is capable of entering a male dominant work or profession. For the unversed, it’s also the name of the 1997 movie starring Demi Moore, who essayed the character of a female Naval officer. Since the character that Demi portrayed in the movie was a bald woman, Jada too is recently sporting a bald look owing to alopecia, a condition that causes extreme hair loss. It was because of this condition that Jada had decided to completely shave off her hair in 2021.

It was because of this reason that Smith was not able to receive Rock’s joke with grain and salt and decided to retaliate with a slap instead. Nonetheless, the actor, when again approached the stage to receive his award, was seen making an apology for the same, addressing everyone present there, except for Chris Rock. “I want to apologize to The Academy; I want to apologize to all of my fellow nominees. I hope the /academy invites me back” he said. Although the implication of this incident can be seen in the forthcoming days, for now, the internet is surprised as the celebs that attended the Oscars ceremony were.
