The BET Awards 2022 honoured Black excellence in music, acting, sports, and culture during the previous year on Sunday, June 26, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. For the second consecutive year, Taraji P. Henson hosted Culture’s Biggest Night at the award show. With six nominations, Doja Cat came into the programme as the most popular. For her No. 1 song “Planet Her,” the top-charting singer was nominated for best female R&B-pop artist, best female hip-hop artist, an album of the year, and BET Her for “Woman.”
She and SZA’s song “Kiss Me More” were nominated for best collaboration and video of the year. SZA, however, did not get any honours. Bruno Mars and Anderson form the R&B combo, Silk Sonic. Paak has the most combined victories with three. “An Evening With Silk Sonic” won best group and album of the year, while Paak was also named video director of the year for his work on their music videos. The best male hip-hop artist and best video awards went to Kendrick Lamar for his collaboration with Baby Keem on “Family Ties.” The best actor went to Will Smith, and the best picture went to “King Richard.”
The next-most nominated performers were Drake and Ari Lennox, who each received four nominations. Jack Harlow, Lil Wayne, Ella Mai, Roddy Ricch, Lizzo, and Kirk Franklin were among the night’s performers. During the performances by Latto and Harlow, respectively, Mariah Carey and Bran’ Nu (often referred to as Brandy) made unexpected entrances. Combs received the ceremony’s Lifetime Achievement Award. An unrecognisable Ye, with a mask covering his whole face, delivered an emotional speech about the 52-year-old rapper, whom he called his “brother,” after a jam-packed tribute concert that included artists like Jodeci, Lil Kim, and Diddy himself.
