What Is Donkey Flight And Its Connection With Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Dunki’?

Dunki involves tremendous risks, including the danger of capture, imprisonment, and deportation. This perilous process is depicted in Shah Rukh Khan’s movie Dunki.

Shah Rukh Khan is all set for his next movie, ‘Dunki,’ directed by none other than Rajkumar Hirani. However, the recently released trailer gave the audience an idea of what the movie is all about.

Many people were unfamiliar with the meaning of ‘Dunki,’ but SRK himself explained to his fans. He took to his X account and wrote, “Because everybody asks, what does Dunki mean? Dunki means being apart from your loved ones. And when you are with them, one feels the moment should last till the end of time. O Maahi O Maahi… feel the love before the sun sets on the horizon today!”

However, in reality, ‘Dunki’ is a Punjabi idiom that means “hopping from place to place,” according to the Migration Policy Institute (MPI). It’s a colloquial term for ‘donkey flights’ or the ‘donkey flights method,’ a risky illegal immigration technique involving crossing a country’s borders through a backdoor route via multiple stops in other countries.

This method has gained popularity, especially for countries like the US, Canada, and the UK, where people from Punjab and Gujarat often use the ‘donkey flights’ method to reach these countries illegally. According to a report by The Times of India, citing USCBP, between February 2019 and March 2023, as many as 149,000 Indians were detained for attempting to enter the US illegally.

‘Dunki’ involves tremendous risks, including the danger of capture, imprisonment, and deportation. This perilous process is depicted in Shah Rukh Khan’s movie ‘Dunki,’ where some individuals will attempt to enter the UK using illegal methods.

Speaking more about the film, it is set to hit theaters on December 22 and stars actors like Taapsee Pannu, Boman Irani, Vicky Kaushal, Vikram Kochhar, and many more.
