Post giving a huge contribution in the film industry, acclaimed director Shyam Benegal passed away on Monday,December 23rd, 2024. The Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award recipient was hailed for his thought-provoking films like Ankur, Nishant, and Manthan, which brought societal issues to the forefront.

Director Shyam Benegal was suffering through a chronic kidney-disease from a long time, which ultimately led to his demise. As informed by his daughter Pia Benegal to the media, the renowned director passed away at 6.38 p.m. at Wockhardt Hospital located in Mumbai Central.“He had been suffering from chronic kidney disease for several years but it had gotten very bad. That’s the reason for his death”, she quoted to PTI.
Reports earlier revealed that Benegal was admitted to the ICU at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai. However, the ailment did not let him survive for longer leading to his death at 90. Recently, the acclaimed director celebrated his 90th birthday on December 14, 2024 with all of his loved ones, and admirers around him.
Talking about his work, Shyam Benegal’s projects had left an indelible mark on the Indian cinema. His ability to tell compelling stories rooted in reality which earned him national and international acclaim. Over the decades, he worked with legendary actors like Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, and Naseeruddin Shah, shaping their careers and redefining filmmaking. The film fraternity and his admirers are in a state of deep sorrow over the loss of a gem. Condolences are pouring in from across the industry, with many calling his death as the end of an era. Details of his funeral are yet to be announced.
