‘Horizon: An American Saga 2’: Kevin Costner’s Epic Western Saga Removed from Theatrical Calendar

The Sequel to Epic Western Faces Delays Amid Uncertain Release Plans

Kevin Costner’s much-anticipated film Horizon: An American Saga 2 has been removed from the theatrical release calendar. The sequel to the epic Western saga, Horizon: An American Saga, was initially scheduled for an August 16 2024 release, but its future now appears uncertain.

The major reason for removing the Kevin Costner starrer sequel from theatrical release is the poor performance of the original film at the box office, released on 28th June 2024.

Kevin Costner, who not only stars in the film but also directs and produces it, has faced significant challenges in bringing this ambitious project to fruition. The Horizon series marks a return to the Western genre for Costner, who previously found success with films like Dances with Wolves (1990) and Open Range (2003).

Territory Pictures, owned by Costner, and its distributing partner, New Line Cinema have decided to switch their passionate project’s release schedule with an expectation of building an audience for the original film as the project cost $100 million in making.

“Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and Max,” the spokesperson fromthe New Line Cinema said. “We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers across the U.S. discover the film in its theatrical run,” the person mentioned, addressing the film’s delay.(Source: The Hollywood Reporter)

The Territory Pictures stated, “The audience response to Horizon, and enthusiasm for seeing our story continue in Horizon 2, has been incredibly gratifying. Kevin made this film for people who love movies and who wanted to go on a journey.” Additionally, they mentioned, “The support that we have received from film fans, and the theater owners, as they experience the first chapter of this saga only serves to reinforce our belief in them and the films that we have made, and we thank them for coming on board for the ride. We welcome the opportunity for that window to be expanded as we know it will only serve to enhance the experience of seeing Horizon 2.”

The Horizon series aims to depict the tumultuous and transformative period of the American West, focusing on themes of survival, community, and the relentless pursuit of a better future. The delay of Horizon: An American Saga 2 follows a broader trend of scheduling changes in the film industry, influenced by various production challenges and shifting market conditions. While this news may be disheartening for fans, it also reflects the industry’s commitment to delivering high-quality cinematic experiences.

As audiences await further information, the removal of Horizon: An American Saga 2 from the theatrical calendar underscores the unpredictable nature of film production. It also highlights the enduring popularity and anticipation of Kevin Costner’s work in the Western genre. Fans remain hopeful that the delay will ultimately result in a film that meets and exceeds their expectations.
