In an exclusive conversation with Lehren Retro, Zarina shared an unforgettable memory from her early days in the film industry. Back then, she stayed at Shabana Azmi’s home until she made it in the industry. Recalling the time she said, “Main Shashi ji ki itni badi fan thi.” She revealed that Shashi Kapoor frequently visited Shabana’s home as Prithvi Theatre was close to her place. Zarina said, “Shabana ke ghar vo bahut aate the, matlab unka ghar baju mein tha, so Prithvi Theatre se he used to visit Shabana’s home.”
Zarina’s fan-girl moment: “Unka joota paani peekar maine kaha…”
One day, Shashi Kapoor came over and asked for a glass of water. Zarina vividly recalled, “Ek din kya hua, paani mangwaya unhone aur aadha paani peeke vo glass rakke chale gaye.” Once he left, Zarina rushed to the glass, “Jaise hi Shashi ji chalein gaye, bhaag kar main jaake and I had that water. Aur vo joota paani peekar maine kaha, ‘Aah, Shashi ji ka joota paani pi gayi!’ Oh god! I cannot forget that,” she cherished that moment by recalling the most hilarious fan-girl thing.

Zarina Wahab and Shashi Kapoor later worked together in the 1981 film Ek Aur Ek Gyaarah, which also featured Vinod Khanna and Neetu Singh. She shared an incident where Shashi Kapoor scolded her for being 15 minutes late to the set, as he was very particular about punctuality. “That day changed me,” Zarina admitted, explaining how she became punctual ever since.
