Zarina Wahab, the beloved veteran actress known for her stellar roles in the 80s and 90s, continues to charm audiences with her age-appropriate roles in today’s films. She has come a long way from being a student at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) to becoming one of the most versatile stars in the industry. In an exclusive interview with Lehren Retro, Zarina opened up about an unforgettable moment when Raj Kapoor commented on her appearance. When asked if it was true that the legendary filmmaker once said she wasn’t glamorous enough, Zarina shared the full story.
As FTII was located near Raj Kapoor’s bungalow in Pune and he often invited the students over. Recalling the incident, Zarina said, “Hum sabko bhulate the poore institute ke logon ke saath. Sab ache se ready hokar gaye the humlog and he looked at me like this and said ‘Tum bangan lagti ho,’ he said.” Zarina shared that the remark from such a big superstar upset her a lot at the time.
However, the moment when she was leaving, Raj Kapoor clarified his statement. Zarina recalled, “Nikalte waqt unhone ne kaha, ‘Tumhe pata hai maine kyu bangan kaha?’ I replied, ‘Nahi sir,’ and he said, ‘Main Waheeda Rehman ko bangan kehta tha.’” Sharing this anecdote, Zarina felt goosebumps during the interview. Being compared to Waheeda Rehman, her favourite childhood actress whom she admired a lot was a huge compliment and coming from an iconic Bollywood actor became a special moment for her.
