Mithun Chakraborty, a name synonymous with revolutionizing Indian cinema through his dance moves and acting, has been an iconic figure in Bollywood for decades. From starring in classics like Disco Dancer to winning three National Awards, his journey has been remarkable. Recently, it was announced Mithun Da will be awarded with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest film honour, in recognition of his incredible contributions to Indian cinema and this news has left fans elated ever since it has been announced.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the award, saying, “Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations. Honored to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema.”
In an interview with India Today, Mithun Chakraborty revealed his mixed emotions upon hearing the news. “To be honest, I’ve been saying this all day. But trust me, I’m speaking the truth. I still haven’t come to terms with it. It’s such a big award, such a big honor. I can neither smile nor cry in happiness. I am completely stunned,” he shared.
Mithun Da, who rose from the humble streets of Kolkata, shared how difficult his early days in Bollywood were. While his fame as a superstar is well-known, his beginnings were marked by hardship and uncertainty. “Main jaise bolta hu, main chota gali se, it’s a blind lane from Kolkata to Mumbai. You know, it was so hard. Khana nahi mila, footpath pe so liya, kabhi five garden mein bhi so liya,” Mithun revealed.
The actor explained how people often ask him why he hasn’t made a biopic about his life. His response is deeply rooted in his own experiences. Mithun Chakraborty revealed, “Mera story inspire nahi karega, usko morally down kar dega. Fir jo young ladke hai struggle karte haina, vo himmat thod denge. It’s so hard and deep.” Describing his rise in Bollywood as both “traumatic” and “painful”, Mithun reflected on how surreal it is to receive India’s biggest film honor, despite his challenging past. “That boy, who once had to sleep on footpaths, now receiving such an award… it’s something I still cannot digest. I still feel like I’m in a dream,” he added.
At 74, Mithun Chakraborty’s legacy continues to inspire. From iconic roles in Disco Dancer, Agneepath, and Ghar Ek Mandir, he cemented his place as Bollywood’s original dancing star. Movies like Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye and Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki further solidified his status as a versatile actor.
Mithun Da is set to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award on October 8 at the National Film Awards ceremony. His remarkable career, filled with unforgettable performances, has earned him a place in the history of Indian cinema and his story is one of perseverance and passion.
