70th National Film Awards ceremony took place on October 7, 2024 at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. It was a night of celebration for Indian cinema with President Droupadi Murmu presenting the awards. Marking one of the most emotional moments of the evening was when veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest recognition in Indian cinema. Receiving the award, he reflected on his journey and struggles, expressing his gratitude for the award and calling it a moment of great pride.
South Indian cinema shone brightly at the event, dominating with big wins. Rishab Shetty won Best Actor for his powerful performance in Kannada’s masterpiece Kantara. The movie itself was named the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, highlighting the growing influence of Kannada cinema. Nithya Menen won the Best Actress award for her role in Tamil film Thiruchitrambalam, marking another victory for South Indian films.
Surprising his fans, AR Rahman added another National Award to his collection, winning his seventh for the film Ponniyin Selvan I, which also won Best Film. The blockbuster KGF Chapter 2 was recognized for its technical achievements, winning Best Kannada Film and Best Action Direction. Its gripping action sequences and grand narrative were praised throughout the evening.
The night also saw Manoj Bajpayee receiving a Special Mention for his performance in Gulmohar, further showcasing his skill as one of India’s finest actors. On the other hand, Sooraj Barjatya won the Best Director award for Uunchai and the film Kutch Express was recognized for promoting social and environmental values.
In the music category, Arijit Singh was awarded Best Male Playback Singer for his popular song ‘Kesariya’ from Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva. While, Bombay Jayashri won Best Female Playback Singer, adding to the celebration of musical talent.
