Thangalaan, the much-awaited action-adventure film starring Vikram, is finally ready for its OTT release after resolving a legal issue. Directed by Pa Ranjith, the movie first came to theaters on August 15, 2024. While it got mixed reviews from critics, the film still made a global box office collection of ₹100-150 crore. However, the Thangalaan OTT release faced delays due to a legal case that aimed to stop its online release.
The legal case was filed by a resident named Porkodi, who claimed that the movie showed Buddhism in a respectful light but made fun of Vaishnavism, which could cause tensions between religious groups. The petitioner wanted to stop the online release of Thangalaan. But on October 19, the Madras High Court rejected the case. The court pointed out that the movie had already been approved for theatrical release by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), so there was no need to block its OTT release.
With the legal issue now solved, Thangalaan will be now available to stream on OTT-giant streaming platform Netflix, during the Diwali festival with the official date yet to be announced. Producer Gnanavel Raja confirmed that Netflix wanted the movie to come out during Diwali, as it’s a great time for big releases. He also addressed rumours about further delays, stating that the only problem had been the legal case, which has now been cleared. Fans can now look forward to watching Thangalaan on Netflix as expected.
The movie stars Chiyaan Vikram, Malavika Mohanan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Pasupathy and many other stunning actors with the story set around the famous Kolar Gold Fields.
