Shah Rukh Khan has acquired the remake and negative rights of the 1998 comic drama Dulhe Raja

Shah Rukh Khan as an actor is headlining three films next year and as a producer, he is delivering interesting content under his production house Red Chillies Entertainment. The last project by SRK’s production company was Alia Bhatt’s Darlings which has created waves on OTT receiving positive reviews. Now latest buzz in the industry informs that Shah Rukh Khan has acquired the remake and negative rights of the 1998 comic drama Dulhe Raja.

The original film is a Harmesh Malhotra directorial featuring Govinda and Raveena Tandon in lead roles. Dulhe Raja’s remake is finally on cards and this comes as great news for Govinda fans. If reports are to be believed SRK’s company Red Chillies Entertainment has acquired the blanket rights of the film. Farhad Samji, who is shooting Salman Khan’s ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’, will be penning the screenplay.

A source close to the development confirmed the remake of Govinda and Raveena Tandon starrer Dulhe Raja by SRK. It is quite unknown that Shah Rukh Khan is a fan of comedy genre and Dulhe Raja is one of his pop entertainers. SRK immediately agreed when one of his associates suggested the idea of acquiring Dulhe Raja’s rights.

Farhad Samji is working on a fresh screenplay retaining the original flick. If the screenplay will be interesting and actors show keen interest Red Chillies will remake the film. Otherwise, they will continue to earn remuneration from television and digital screenings.

The source revealed, “Very few know that Shah Rukh Khan is indeed a big fan of the comedy genre and Dulhe Raja is one of those pop corn entertainers that he likes. When one of the associates suggested the idea of acquiring the blanket rights of Dulhe Raja, SRK was game on for the idea. The satellite and digital rights also rest with SRK and his company that would now sell it to the partners and reap rich returns from renewal of licence.”

The source added, “In-fact, Farhad Samji, who is presently working with Salman Khan on Kabhi Bhai Kabhi Jaan, has been working on a draft of Dulhe Raja. He has been advised to make a fresh screenplay by retaining the world of the original and its work in progress at the moment. If the screenplay is faithful adaptation and actors show keen interest, Red Chillies will be more than happy to remake the film. If not, they are content with the revenues that the film will generate from television and digital screenings.”

Dulhe Raja is one of Govinda’s funniest movies starring an ensemble cast including Kader Khan, Raveena Tandon, Prem Chopra, Johnny Lever, Asrani, Viju Khote and Mohnish Behl among others. It would be interesting to see who will replace Govinda in the remake.
