Director Ashutosh Gowarikar’s 2001 film ‘Lagaan’ tends to be one of the most special films in Aamir Khan’s career. The patriotic sports drama, set during the British Raj, did not become a fan favorite but also resonated with the International audience equally well. But do you know there was so much of warnings that came through Aamir Khan’s way before releasing the film Lagaan. Lyricist of the film Javed Akhtar who was first offered this film, warned Aamir Khan for making this movie. He along with the Shehenshaah, Amitabh Bachchan advised Aamir that Lagaan might turnt out to be a flop picture.
Amitabh Bachchan Warned Aamir Khan About Lagaan
Aamir revealed in a conversation with India Today, that he when he went to Amitabh Bachchan to ask him for the narration, Amitabh agreed but made him aware that films followed by his narration never work out. As Aamir quotes, “Mr. Bachchan told me that. Whenever I perform the narration of any Bollywood movie, it always flops”.
However keeping the belief within him constant, Aamir Khan went to Javed Akhtar post narration. He said when Javed came to know that he is coming up with a film like Lagaan, and saw the script, he immediately got surprised. Javed quickly asked back Aamir Khan about why he was even thinking to bring such a movie out.
Aamir Khan Reveals Javed Akhtar Said Film Won’t Even Work For A Single Day
As Aamir reveals, Javed Akhtaer said, “Why are you making this? This will not even work for a day. You see, sports, cricket films have never been successful.” When Aamir asked him what is wrong in Lagaan, Javed said that “the era currently is about people wearing brands, making films in Switzerland. You on the other hand, are wearin dhotis, showing the story of a village, and are talking in Awadhi, who will even understand your language?” Adding onto it, when Javed noticed the narration was in Big B’s voice, he too highlighted the issue of films flopping when narrated by Amitabh Bachchan.
All these warnings and advised from the megastar and a notable lyricist put Aamir in a baffled state of mind. He could not understand if he shoudl be doing this or not. However, he did not lose any hope. He spoke about getting sleepless nights ahead of releases while also not letting others sleep. He said that the more excited he was about the film at that time, the more stressed he used to become.
