Gullak Season 4 Critic Review:
From buying curtains and bhaji, serving chai and gajjar halwa and taking on the municipality to losing a gold chain, mishandling adolescence and planning to move out for more space, the middleclass family of four is back.
Bantering parents Santosh Mishra (Jameel Khan) and Shanti (Geetanjali Kulkarni), still a closely bonded couple, older son Anand alias Anu (Vaibhav Raj Gupta) still facing ups and downs as a medical rep, and Aman (Harsh Mayar), the youngest, still looking too adult to pass off as an adolescent schoolboy.
Looking on and spilling their stories is good old gullak, the mudpot piggy bank (voiced by Shivankit Singh Parihar), with nosey neighbour Bittu ki mummy (Sunita Rajwar) dropping in occasionally.
Director Shreyansh Pandey keeps it routinely middleclass, the mother in the kitchen and the one observing religious fasts but hubby Santosh ready with a helping hand.
Statements on Bulldozer Babu, feeding the ego of petty officers and the passing of an
envelope giving a new feeling of ghamand to the bribe giver, start off the new season. It soon navigates fasting and temple visits on auspicious days and a missing gold chain sparking off comments like, “She was as happy as a mantri in a mahagathbandhan sarkar”.
With the dad making his faux pas, like going on about a gold chain when his wife’s clearly distraught at having lost it, the foursome manages to rally around, never leaving anyone behind. “Nobody enjoys going to a police station, neither the accused nor the victim,” is a background comment as the family heads together to file an FIR about the chain that’s been snatched away, everybody describing the snatching episode to the lady cop except Shanti, the silent victim. “It’s a no-water fast, not a maun vrat na?” remarks the cop as she finally gets Shanti to open up. The cops don’t come off as insensitive as this show is not about villains but situations in a mundane life, like dealing with a kabaddiwala. Suddenly, everybody loves the stuff they’ve never looked at for years and feels senti about giving it away. Such an everyday family affair.
Punning on words like ‘chayn’ (peace of mind) in the episode on the gold chain, and
juxtaposing ‘putra’ with ‘patra’ in another, the gullak keeps up the storytelling, each episode a standalone by itself.
There are muff-ups. Like Aman’s friend Suryanarayan warning him that he’s Sunny in front of a girl but the girl calling him only Suryanarayan. Much discussion over the arrangement of chairs when girls join them in a coffee shop and far too much tension at home over a love letter written by Aman, lead to simple solutions and a happy family at the end of each day.
But Jameel Khan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Vaibhav Raj and Sunita Rajwar win you over. Will the 5 th season move to a new apartment with a new set of everyday problems? The gullak which lies broken by the end of this season, has seen it all so far.
Gullak Season 4 – Watch Or Not?: If you like the simplicity of the everyday Mishra family, watch it.
