Russo Brothers To Return For Next Two ‘Marvel’ Movies

The directors of four blockbuster MCU films, including 'Avengers: Endgame’, are reportedly in early talks to helm the next two 'Avengers' movies.

The Russo Brothers, renowned for their direction of four major films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) — Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019) — are reportedly in talks to return to Marvel Studios to direct two new films. Collectively, their movies have grossed an impressive $6.681 billion, with Endgame standing as the second-highest-grossing movie of all time globally, with $2.79 billion.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, discussions are in the early stages, but Marvel Studios is eager to secure filmmakers for the fifth and sixth Avengers movies. Among those considered for the role, Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy was also offered a deal earlier.

For those unaware, significant changes have occurred regarding the fifth Avengers movie. Initially, Destin Daniel Cretton was set to direct, but he departed a month before actor Jonathan Majors was sentenced in a harassment and assault case in December. Majors was roped in as the time-traveling villain Kang in the previously titled movie Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, scheduled for release on May 1, 2026. However, the film’s new title and further details are expected to be unveiled at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con panel in a few days.

The sixth film, Secret Wars, is anticipated to be released on May 7, 2027. The Russo Brothers have previously expressed interest in adapting the 1980s comic book series, which focuses on an all-powerful antagonist known as the Beyonder. In the original storyline, the Beyonder pits Marvel’s heroes and villains against each other on a planet called Battleworld.

Before making their mark in the cinematic world, the Russo Brothers directed and produced comedy television series such as Arrested Development (2003–2005), Community (2009–2014), and Happy Endings (2011–2012). They also won a Primetime Emmy Award for Arrested Development.
