Joaquin Phoenix Exits Todd Haynes’ Untitled Gay Romance Film

The ‘Napoleon’ Actor Departure from ‘Carol’ Filmmaker’s Untitled Project Five Days Before its Filming Schedule.

In a surprising turn of events, Joaquin Phoenix has exited Todd Haynes’ upcoming gay romance film for unclear reasons. The actor left Hayne’s project five days before its filming schedule, which was located in Guadalajara, Mexico. The untitled project, which had garnered significant attention for Phoenix’s involvement, will not move forward without the Academy Award-winning actor.

Phoenix, known for his transformative performances in films like Joker and Her, was initially set to star in the film, which explores a complex romantic relationship between two men. The project, still in its early stages, has been described as a bold and intimate portrayal of love, expected to challenge conventional narratives within the genre.

The gay-romance film is set in the 1930s co-starring Danny Ramirez with Phoenix, whose prior film credits include Top Gun: Maverick, No Exit, Winner, and his upcoming film includes Captain America: Brave New World. The film’s producers are Pam Koffler and Christine Valcon.

“If you are tempted to finger wag or admonish us that ‘that’s what you get for casting a straight actor’ — DON’T,” Valcon shared on her Facebook. “This was HIS project that he brought to the US – and Killer’s record on working with LGBTQ actors/crew/directors speaks for itself. (and for those of you who HAVE — know that you are making a terrible situation even worse).”  Valcon has deleted the post now.

Haynes, a visionary director known for films like Carol and Far from Heaven, had expressed enthusiasm about working with Phoenix on the project. The film was expected to push boundaries and offer a fresh perspective on LGBTQ+ relationships, continuing Haynes’ tradition of exploring complex emotional landscapes.

The news of Phoenix’s departure has sparked speculation about who might replace him in the lead role. But the makers have confirmed that they will not be recasting the role as they want the Napoleon star to portray the leading character.

The film community eagerly awaits updates on the project, which continues to be one of the most anticipated films in the LGBTQ+ genre. Phoenix’s departure, while unfortunate, has only heightened curiosity about the film’s development and eventual release.
