Emilia Clarke to Star in Peacock’s New Spy Series ‘Ponies’

The Former ‘Game of Thrones’ Star Takes on a New Role in the Upcoming Action-Comedy Series

Emilia Clarke, best known for her portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen’s character in Game of Thrones, is set to star in Peacock’s upcoming spy series Ponies, which blends action, comedy, and espionage. The series, currently in production, is already generating buzz for its unique take on the spy genre and Clarke’s highly anticipated return to television.

Ponies is described as a high-energy action-comedy that follows a group of misfit spies who find themselves in a variety of unpredictable and often humorous situations. Clarke will play a lead role in the series, showcasing a different side of her acting range. This marks a significant departure from her intense portrayal of the Mother of Dragons in Game of Thrones and promises to highlight her versatility as an actress.

‘Ponies,’ means persons of no interest, and the plot settled in 1977, Moscow, revolves around two such fearless women, Bea (played by Clarke) and Twila who work for an American embassy as anonymous secretaries until their husbands are killed mysteriously in the USSR eventually becoming CIA operatives.

Written by co-creators and showrunners, Susanna Fogel and David Iserson, the series will be directed by Fogel. They also serve as the executive producers with Clarke and  Jessica Rhoades. The co-executive producers are Katherine Bridle and Alison Mo Massey. With Peacock expanding its original programming lineup, Ponies is expected to be a flagship series for the streaming service, blending sharp humour with thrilling spy action.

Peacock’s strategy with Ponies is to capture audiences who are looking for something new in the crowded spy genre. By casting Clarke, they hope to draw in her fanbase from her Game of Thrones days while appealing to viewers who enjoy a mix of action and comedy. The series aims to be a fun, light-hearted addition to Peacock’s slate of original content, offering a unique blend of genres that is expected to stand out in the streaming landscape.

With filming underway, anticipation is building for Ponies, and early indications suggest it could be one of Peacock’s standout hits. Emilia Clarke’s return to TV in a new genre, combined with a promising storyline and a dynamic creative team, sets the stage for what could be a fresh and entertaining series.
