David Cronenberg and Amy Adams to Receive Special Honors at TIFF 2024

Veteran Director and Acclaimed Actress to be Celebrated for Their Contributions to Film Industry

Legendary film director David Cronenberg and acclaimed actress Amy Adams will be honoured with special awards at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Cronenberg will be honoured with ‘Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award’ and Adams will be receiving the ‘TIFF Tribute Performer Award’ at the sixth annual TIFF Tribute Awards on Sunday, September 8 this year.

TIFF announced the awards through a press release on their website along with the 49th Toronto International Film Festival dates, from the 5th to the 15th of September 2024. Korean-Candian actress and producer, Sandra Oh will be serving as the honorary chair for the TIFF Tribute Awards inaugural. Cronenberg and Adams will be honoured with the awards at TIFF’s Tribute Awards gala at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.

TIFF CEO, Cameron Bailey, stated, “In the five years that TIFF has been honouring such standout talent as Joaquin Phoenix, Michelle Yeoh, Jessica Chastain, Chloe Zhao, Taika Waititi, and Ari Wegner on their road to further awards success, we’ve been inspired to watch our Tribute Awards gala grow into a must-attend event.”

David Cronenberg is renowned for his work in the horror and science fiction genres. His illustrious career, spanning over five decades, includes iconic films such as The Fly (1986), Videodrome (1983) and A History of Violence (2005). His innovative approach to filmmaking and his ability to explore the darker aspects of human nature have earned him the Career Achievement Award at TIFF 2024. Cronenberg’s latest film The Shrouds (2024) had its world premiere in the Main Competition of the 77th Cannes Film Festival held on this May.

Amy Adams is known for her versatile performances across various genres including, Junebug (2005), American Hustle (2013), Big Eyes (2014), and Vice (2018). With six Academy Award nominations, along with seven BAFTA nominations and two Golden Globe wins, she has established herself as one of the most talented actresses of her generation. Her upcoming film, Nightbitch will be world premiered at TIFF 2024. The horror-comedy, directed by Mareille Heller is adapted from Rachel Yoder’s 2021 novel by the same name.

Last year, Shawn Levy, known for making Free Guy (2021), and The Adam Project (2022) was honoured with the Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award at TIFF 2023. The previous recipients of the TIFF Tribute Performer Award include Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Brendan Fraser, Anthony Hopkins, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jessica Chastain.
