During The Hollywood Reporter’s It Happened in Hollywood podcast, Ben Affleck, aged 48, discussed the production of the 2007 film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. In the movie, Affleck portrayed the killer of the renowned outlaw, played by Brad Pitt.
Affleck’s performance in the role garnered him nominations for prestigious awards such as the Academy Award, the Golden Globe, and the Screen Actors…Affleck has since acknowledged that he could have shown more gratitude during the awards season. During an award show, I was chewing gum and received criticism for not taking the event seriously. Looking back, I understand that I could have shown more respect as it holds significance.
Ben Affleck expressed the significance of being recognized by fellow professionals, describing them as a dedicated and highly skilled group. He also praised the overall positive nature of the community and acknowledged that his behavior at industry events could have been more respectful.
Affleck, aged 31 at the time, had a newborn at home which played a part in his hesitation to “dress up and participate in a TV show as a contestant for something. … So the pressure was more than the enjoyment and it surpassed my wish to be there. I preferred to be at home with my new baby.” Affleck would later have another shot at major awards with 2016’s Manchester by the Sea, which secured him the Oscar and Golden Globe for best actor.
The victory was somewhat marred by the reappearance of sexual harassment accusations from a 2010 civil lawsuit filed by two employees on the set of the Affleck-directed mockumentary I’m Not Here. Affleck settled the lawsuit out of court, and the terms of the settlement prohibit him from discussing the case publicly. However, he did mention it in 2018, admitting that he had allowed for an “unprofessional environment” to develop on the set.
The actor regrets not acknowledging Manchester studio Amazon more during his second round on the awards circuit for Jesse James, admitting that he should have praised Amazon Films for giving the movie a chance.
Winning the Oscar was a humbling experience for me. Despite any doubts I may have had, they quickly vanished when I stood on that stage, looking out at people I have admired for so long and whose work I have followed since I was young. Seeing their faces looking back at me was truly special.
Affleck’s upcoming movie, a crime comedy titled The Instigators, featuring Matt Damon and helmed by Doug Liman, will premiere on Apple TV+ on August 9th.
