Andie MacDowell Reveals Why She Skipped The Cannes Film Festival In 1989

Andie MacDowell, who never missed the Cannes Film Festival, once skipped the festival in 1989 after having a baby to avoid misogynistic comments on her postpartum body.

Actress Andie MacDowell marked her presence at the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival as her long-lasting ritual. She graced the red carpet of Cannes 2024 in her silver shimmery bodycon gown and icy blonde hair. Being a versatile actress, her presence at Cannes 2024 was indeed noticeable. The Green Card actress revealed that she was once scared of attending the Cannes Film Festival back in 1989.

Talking to People Magazine, the Bad Girls actress revealed her story about not attending the Cannes Film Festival for the promotion of her 1989 film ‘Sex, Lies & Videotape’. She said, “I just had a baby. I was afraid.” As she gave birth to a baby and was going through a postpartum phase, it was difficult for her to attend such a global attraction event at that time. Earlier, there were many misogynistic critics who could comment on women’s bodies, and postpartum bodies were subject to huge criticism. Hence, the actress chose to step out of the festival; she called it, “That’s a shame. It’s a real shame.” Of course, things have changed a lot now. “Because of the shift in our expectations and because we brought it out, they can’t be like that to us anymore,” MacDowell added.

But Andie also said that if a similar situation happened now in her life, she would not have done the same. The 66-year-old is a proud mother of three. Justin Qualley, Rainey Qualley, and Margaret Qualley. On the work front, the actress was last seen in the action-thriller ‘Red Right Hand’ in February 2024.
