Ridley Scott’s recent release, Gladiator II, has officially stepped into the international box office arena with a whopping $87 million from 63 markets, marking a powerful start for the quarter-century-in-the-making sequel to the 2000 release.
This success represents Paramount Pictures’ largest international R-rated opening weekend and Scott’s best overseas debut. His highest-grossing films so far include “The Martian”, “Gladiator”, and “Prometheus”. The sequel enjoyed the highest launch in the United Kingdom with 11.4 million dollars, followed by France, Spain, Australia and Mexico.
The sequel to “Gladiator” has a $250 million-plus budget, so it needs to resonate at the global box office to reach the right success. Although the film garnered a range of mixed reviews with a 75% average on Rotten Tomatoes, the success figures tend to speak louder. The story picks up two decades after the original as Lucius (Mescal), the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s emperor Commodus, enters the Colosseum to seek to return the glory of Rome to its people.
