Shah Rukh Khan, known as the King of Romance in Bollywood, has played many beloved romantic heroes. However, director Nikkhil Advani recently revealed that “Shah Rukh Khan hated” romantic films, despite his success in this genre. In a recent chat on the Cyrus Says podcast, Advani shared that Khan prefers action over romance, discussing his reactions to famous scenes.
Advani recalled the memorable helicopter scene from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Khan thought he would have a thrilling moment jumping from the helicopter, but he was disappointed to find out he would just step out to greet his on-screen mother, Jaya Bachchan. Advani said, “The scene was more about Jaya’s character sensing her son’s arrival, which added emotional depth”.
The director also talked about Khan’s role in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, where he brought an exciting touch to a basketball scene. Khan actually choreographed this sequence, treating it like an action scene. Because of this, he got a special credit for “thrills” in the opening credits of both Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

Nikkhil Advani pointed out that Khan often felt uneasy about being known for romantic roles. “Shah Rukh Khan hated love stories, despite being labeled the King of Romance,” he said. Films like Dil Se, Darr, and Ram Jaane, where Khan explored darker themes, are among his favorites. He often expressed a desire to take on more intense roles instead of just romantic leads.
This dislike for love stories is reflected in Khan’s upcoming work. In King, he plays a professional assassin and will appear alongside his daughter, Suhana Khan. This role aligns more with Khan’s passion for action.
