Aas Mohammed Turaz, known as A.M. Turaz, for the aware, he stands out as one of the favourite lyricists in the Indian music industry, celebrated for his impeccable lyrics. His writings, including ‘Aayat’, ‘Binte Dil’, ‘Tera Zikr’, ‘Kabhi Jo Badal Barse’, ‘Udi’, and ‘Ghoomar’, resonate timelessly with listeners, reflecting the beauty of his words.
However, the audience often overlooks the creators behind these flawless outputs, instead focusing on the faces of cinema. Actors receive acclaim for movies which he disagree with but he discusses the fundamental questions about the creators are given little mention than the others.
In conversation with Lehren, A.M. Turaz shared insights on the same and the challenges faced the creative people like him. Coming from Uttar Pradesh to Mumbai with dreams of becoming a lyricist, he initially wrote scripts for television before landing his first film opportunity with ‘Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamana’ in 2007. His breakthrough came with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Guzaarish’, marking the beginning of their exceptional collaboration on blockbusters like ‘Padmaavat’, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, and the recent hit web series ‘Heeramandi’.
Reflecting on the difference in recognition between creators and actors, Turaz said, “Art is confidence and calling the hero is the face of cinema is wrong.” He mainly advocated for prioritizing film creators over actors, highlighting the unique creative process that distinguishes in each cinematic ventures. “Lines written for one film cannot be replicated for another emotion in a different film,” he noted, while the actors can be a face of various movies assigned by the creators. Turaz mentioned, he is not only talking about lyricist himself but it also includes beyond lyricists to directors, writers, musicians, and other contributors’ integral to a film’s success. He discussed industry challenges and his admiration for idols while sharing anecdotes from his collaborations with Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
