Director Rakesh Roshan ‘s cult classic Karan Arjun is making a grand comeback to the silver screen on November 22, 2024. This timeless Bollywood gem, starring Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan is being re-released ahead of its 30th anniversary in 2025, sparking excitement among fans who hold this film close to their hearts.
In a throwback conversation with Lehren, director Rakesh Roshan reflected on his unconventional approach to filmmaking which made Karan Arjun a household name. Known for his knack for storytelling, he spoke about how he diverged from the usual Bollywood narrative of reincarnation-themed love stories to present a unique tale about a mother and her two sons.
The director talked about how many Indian films earlier was centered on reincarnation as a couple’s love story, while Roshan chose to focus on the bond between a mother and her sons. This unconventional narrative struck a chord with audiences, turning Karan Arjun into a cultural phenomenon, inspiring countless households to lovingly call their sons “Karan” and “Arjun”.

Adding on, Rakesh Roshan noted about his dedication to creating songs that resonated deeply with the film’s narrative rather than relying on popular trends. “Har gaana feeling se banayi hai, aur kahani ke saath hi hum gaye hai,” he said. “Aisa nahi kiya hai ki chalo yeh hit gaana hai isko le lete hai picture mein, jo haqsar hota bhi hai aur vo chalte bhi hai. Par main waisa nahi hu karta.” His commitment to authenticity set a benchmark for quality storytelling and music composition in Bollywood.
Reflecting on the evolving industry, he added, “Bichme yeh hogaya tha ki taken for granted tha, ki koi picture bana li kaise bhi bana li. Ki abhi nahi aisa nahi, now only the fittest will survive. Matlab jo apna kaam jaanta hai, jo achi picturein bana sakta hai, vahi survive karenge.”
Karan Arjun narrates the gripping tale of two brothers reincarnated to seek justice for their father’s murder. Featuring powerhouse performances by Raakhee Gulzar, Mamta Kulkarni, Kajol and Amrish Puri as the menacing antagonist, the film remains etched in Bollywood’s history.
