Hasrat Jaipuri, a name synonymous with romantic lyrics in Hindi cinema, is regarded as one of the pioneers of Bollywood songwriting. Before rising to fame, he worked as a bus conductor for eight years. His journey from a struggling poet to one of the greatest lyricists of all time is nothing short of inspiring. In an exclusive throwback interview on Lehren Podcast, the legendary lyricist shared rare insights into his life and career.

Hasrat Jaipuri: From Struggles To Success

Born as Iqbal Hussain in Jaipur on April 15, 1922, Hasrat Jaipuri moved to Mumbai in search of opportunities. He fell in love with a Hindu girl named Radha, but knowing their love had no future, he decided to shift his focus and headed to the City of Dreams. While working as a bus conductor, fate led him to an unexpected breakthrough. He was discovered by Raj Kapoor, who gave him his first break in the 1949 film Barsaat with the song Jiya Beqaraar Hai. The song became an instant hit, marking the beginning of his illustrious career.

Hasrat Jaipuri went on to pen timeless lyrics for classic films such as Shree 420, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Sangam, Barsaat, Chori Chori, Love in Tokyo and more. His career spanned over five decades, from 1949 until his passing in 1999. One of his most cherished songs, Yeh Mera Prem Patra Padhkar from Sangam (1964), holds a special place in his heart. It wasn’t just a song; it was a heartfelt love letter he had written for Radha, which was later used in the film.

In the same interview, Hasrat Jaipuri expressed his views on why people still prefer old songs over contemporary music. He believed that songs of his era carried deep emotions, rhythm, and melody, unlike today’s music, which lacks that soulful connection. His words resonate with many music lovers who still find comfort in Bollywood’s golden melodies.

Hasrat Jaipuri left behind a treasure trove of songs that continue to be cherished across generations. His journey proves that talent, perseverance, and fate can change one’s life in unimaginable ways.
