Revolutionizing Indian cinema with his innovative filmmaking, Dev Anand became the first leading Bollywood star to pen an intriguing autobiography. Titled ‘Romancing With Life’, the memoir explores the complete journey from his initial years in Gurdaspur during the 1930s to his Bollywood debut amidst the industry’s struggling period in 1940s. The book also delves into his deep friendships with legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt and his brothers Chetan and Vijay Anand, alongside his collaborations with music maestros SD and RD Burman.
The memoir includes the time when Dev Anand faced a tragic time of his unfulfilled romance with his co-star Suraiya. While, it also sheds light on his enduring marriage to actress Kalpana Kartik, including about his children Suniel Anand and Devina Anand. Additionally, talking about timeless actresses like Madhubala, Geeta Bali, Vyjayanthimala, Mumtaz, Hema Malini, and others who became Bollywood icons, after they were given break by Anand.
During the autobiography’s launch press conference in the late 2000s, Dev Anand also reminisced about being honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award in America during his golden jubilee in the film industry.
‘Romancing With Life’ was unveiled by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Delhi and later Devsaab himself launched it in Mumbai, in the presence of star-studded guests at grand event.
