In 2001, the Indian film industry witnessed a remarkable film titled ‘Censor,’ based on how censorship works in the cinema world and the consequences filmmakers face. This project was brought to life by none other than the greatest star in the history of Indian cinema, Mr. Dev Anand. The superstar, who worked in more than 100 films over a career spanning six decades, became not only a successful actor but also a director who presented numerous movies.
‘Censor’ featured an ensemble cast of A-list actors including Dev Anand himself, Hema Malini, Rekha, Amrish Puri, Jackie Shroff, Raj Babbar, Shammi Kapoor, Raj Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Johnny Lever, Ayesha Jhulka, Govinda, and many others, all of whom set the screens on fire with their presence.
Looking back on the grand launch event of ‘Censor,’ the cast and crew expressed immense happiness about finally working on a film meant to create change and provide insights into the workings of censorship. Dream-girl Hema Malini radiated as she shared her great pleasure in being part of Dev Anand’s directorial project, in which she played his wife. The veteran actress said, “At first, I was a little hesitant, but then I felt I couldn’t say no to Dev Saab.”
Reflecting her sentiments, Jackie Shroff said, “I hope what Dev Saab has in his heart, people see and accept it,” while Amrish Puri’s enlightening reaction was, “Dev Saab ne kaha aur hum haazir hain (We are just a call away if it comes from Dev Saab).”
Additionally, actors Ayesha Jhulka, Raj Babbar, and Johnny Lever also expressed their honourable belief in Dev Anand’s courageous concept, which was never seen before in the history of Indian cinema at that time.
