Over the first half of 2024, the Hindi box office has amassed over 1000 crore, totaling approximately 1307 crore from 29 releases, including two Hollywood films and three dubbed South Indian movies. This performance, however, falls short of the previous year’s first-half earnings, which reached 1846 crore—42% higher than this year’s total.

In 2023, the substantial revenue came from around 25 films, featuring three Hollywood blockbusters and two South Indian dubbed films. This year, five major releases have hit the screens: Hrithik Roshan’s “Fighter” in January, followed by Ajay Devgn’s “Shaitaan” and “Maidaan,” Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff’s “Bade Miyan Chote Miyan,” and Prabhas’s “Kalki 2898 AD.”

While “Fighter” started strong, “BMCM” and “Maidaan” had disappointing openings of Rs 15.5 crore and Rs 7 crore, respectively. Unlike last year’s hits like “Pathaan” and “Jawan,” 2024’s big-budget films have underperformed.

However, mid-level movies such as “Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya,” “Crew,” “Shaitaan,” “Munjya,” and “Article 370” have exceeded expectations. Meanwhile, South cinema is dominating the Indian box office again, with Nag Ashwin’s Telugu film “Kalki 2898 AD” which revived theatre owners’ spirits with a record-breaking global opening of Rs 191.5 crore.
