In an exclusive throwback interview with Lehren Retro, Vidya Balan dreamt of becoming a ‘junior Madhuri Dixit’ and talked about her admiration for the actress and how it influenced her decision to pursue acting. She explained, “Shayad main 7th standard mein thi jab mujhe laga ki mujhe actor banna chahiye. I don’t know for the right or wrong reasons, but actually, I was very inspired by Madhuri Dixit in Tezaab.”
The film had a big impact on young Vidya, and she humorously mentioned, “At that point, it was a joke, I used to say, ‘I wanna be a Junior Madhuri Dixit.’” Further on a serious note, she reflected on many people might once in a life got inspired by Madhuri, saying, “Mere khayal se vo film itni acchi film hai because actually I think India mein kitne saaron ne khwab dekha hoga ki vo bhi Madhuri Dixit banenge.” This deep admiration encouraged Vidya to follow her dreams and enter Bollywood, adding on, the Kahani actress mentioned that she didn’t become a ‘Junior Madhuri Dixit’ but “by God’s grace, at least the dream to work in films came true”.
In the same interview, Vidya mentioned how much work went into the 2007 film Bhool Bhulaiyaa. She shared that she wasn’t a trained classical dancer, but she got trained for 12-15 hours to prepare for the role. Leading to her hard work paid off, and her portrayal of Manjulika became one of the most memorable roles in Bollywood history, securing her place in the industry.
