Waheeda Rehman On Her Comeback After 10 years In “Om Jai Jagdish”, Says I Never Plan My Career

Waheeda Rehman has always been very spontaneous in her acting career. Not having any plan was one of the reasons behind her successful acting career.

An actress who always tries to depict the ‘Indian Woman’ through her movies, Waheeda Rehman turns 86 on February 3. Waheeda is one of the most versatile actresses in the film industry and has worked in more than 90 films. To honor her work, the government gave her a National Film Award last year. This most successful actress revealed that she never planned her career. Earlier, she took a long 10-year gap and then made her comeback through “Om Jai Jagdish”. In a conversation with Lehren Retro she talked about her comeback in the industry.

She said that she was a little hesitant to do the Anupam Kher directed “Om Jai Jagdish” after 10 years. “I did this movie because of Anupam. He was the director and, after a gap of 10 years, I was a little hesitant to work, but because Anupam was there, Anil was there, so I thought I feel quite comfortable to work with them again. Also, Anupam knows, being an actor himself, how to take out work from artist”, she added. Waheeda started her career in Bollywood in 1957 with filmmaker Guru Dutt. She showed her internal spirit through many hits, like “Pyaasa”, “Kaagaz Ke Phool”, “Kala Bazar” etc. In 1991 she acted in the film “Lamhe” starring Anil Kapoor. But the film commercially became a flop due to Ajay Devgn’s “Phool Aur Kaante”.  And after that, Waheeda Rehman didn’t appear in any film for 10 years.

Waheeda Rehman didn’t decide that she would work after 10 years. She never planned anything; she just went with the flow. She said, “I didn’t plan anything. My career happened according to the offers I got. I was in Bangalore and there I did one film in 2 years, something like that. I did Mahesh Bhatt’s “Swayam”, Yash Chopra’s “Lamhe” and “Chandni”. Surprisingly, I got this offered, so I never plan anything about my career. It happens.”

But indeed, without having any plan, “Om Jai Jagdish” actress graced the industry with her versatile acting skills. Recently, she played the character of Maharani in the film “Skater Girl” in 2021.
