T20 World Cup: India To Host The Tournament In 2021 & Australia Gets 2022 Edition

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that India will stage the T20 World Cup as planned as 2021, while Australia will now host the tournament in 2022. Read below for further details.

On Friday, India retained the right to stage the T20 World Cup 2021 while Australia will host this year’s postponed edition in 2022. The International Cricket Council (ICC) shared the news after its board meeting, straightening out a schedule that went for a toss due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic. This year’s T20 World Cup edition was postponed because of the rising COVID-19 pandemic, which adversely impacted all the major sporting events across the globe.

In a press release ICC stated, “The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed that the T20 World Cup 2020 that was postponed due to COVID-19 will be held in Australia in 2022. India will host the T20 World Cup 2021 as planned.”

The cricket governing body also confirmed that next year’s Women’s 50-over World Cup has been pushed until February-March 2022 because of the coronavirus impact. The ODI World Cup will be hosted by New Zealand.

The format for the 2021 T20 World Cup will remain as planned for 2020 and all the teams that were qualified for the tournament will now participate in India in 2021. On the other hand, a new qualification process will be started for the 2022 edition that will be staged down under.

A BCCI member said that the cricket governing body of India wasn’t keen to host the 2022 edition of T20 World Cup as it meant that they had to host back-to-back ICC events including 2023 ODI World Cup.

However, the decision has adversely affected the much-awaited ODI World Cup that got pushed by a year. The postponement of the tournament has raised concern about the future of India legends such as Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami, who probably might have might have played their ICC tournament in 2021.
