Actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, the ex-wife of director Shekhar Kapur, accused him of being unfaithful and of treating her disrespectfully when they were together. The director stated in a recent interview that he likes a romantic life and never treats anyone disrespectfully while he is in a relationship.
Shekhar claimed to have been in numerous relationships and to not be able to live without romance. In a discussion, he added that he had never been in a relationship without respect. The relationship persisted even though its dynamics changed. The bond remained even in the absence of romanticism, sex, or a vow to live together.
In his view, it gets harder to end a relationship when one gets to understand the other person. For any relationship to last, respect is necessary. He said that he is still their close buddy because all his relationships, no matter what kind, have always been built on respect.
Suchitra revealed in an earlier interview with Siddharth Kannan that she experienced contempt and adultery in her marriage to Shekar. She asserted that disrespect, not adultery, is the real reason why marriages fail.
In 1999, Shekhar and Suchitra exchanged wedding vows. Following eight years of marriage, they divorced. Before that, Shekhar wed Medha Gujral, the niece of former Indian Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral, and the two divorced in 1994.
