Nicholas Hoult was once set to star opposite Tom Cruise in a sequel to the Mission: Impossible franchise, and the actor is now sharing why he had to leave the film. In an interview with The Guardian, the actor reveals more about the scheduling conflicts that prevented him from starring in the film. In 2020, it was reported that Hoult would be cast as a villain in Mission: Impossible 7. At the time, director Christopher McQuarrie teased Hoult about joining the franchise, writing on Instagram, “Would you mind building a little hell?” to which Hoult replied, “But why hold back a little?”

However, Hoult’s role in Hulu’s The Great prevented him from being available for the film Mission: Impossible. Leaving the role seemed to follow a chain of events in which the actor lost other important roles.

“I did a screen test for Batman and didn’t understand it. Tested screen for Top Gun, but didn’t understand. Then I got the call from Tom Cruise, ‘Hey, how about Mission Impossible?’ OK. I understand. Then I had to quit because I was already addicted to doing more of The Great,” Hoult told The Guardian.
The Hollywood Reporter explained, Reeves reportedly met with Hoult and Pattinson, and both actors had filmed screen tests in costume. Both also had a pre-negotiated agreement that would come into effect for anyone who waived the final eventuality, the screen test. Pattinson was eventually cast as the Caped Crusader. Meanwhile, Hoult didn’t reveal what role he’d auditioned for in Top Gun: Maverick, which would also star Miles Teller and Glen Powell.
Hoult is currently starring on the big screen alongside Nicolas Cage in Universal’s horror comedy Renfield.
