Fans can rejoice as the critically acclaimed series ‘Dark’ creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar teamed up again for another mysterious thriller, 1899. The Netflix series is conceived and produced by Friese and Odar, who also serve as showrunners, and was devised and produced in 1899. Friese also penned the series, while Odar helmed it. Aneurin Barnard, Emily Beecham, Miguel Bernardeau, Andreas Pietschmann, and Maciej Musial feature in the epic thriller.
The recently released Netflix series 1899 is a German multi-language epic period mystery-horror streaming television series. 1899 follows a group of European migrants travelling from London on a steamship to start new lives in New York City. They encounter another migrant ship adrift on the open sea, and their journey begins to turn into a nightmare. 1899 features a star cast including Emily Beecham as neurologist Maura Franklin and Andreas Pietschmann as Captain Eyk Larsen.

Friese shared, “We felt that with the past years of Europe being on the decline, we wanted to give a counterpoint to Brexit, and to nationalism rising in different countries, to go back to that idea of Europe and Europeans working and creating together.” Another question that fans have raised that ‘Is Netflix’s new 1899 series based on a true story of Ghost Ships and the Bermuda Triangle?’
The fear of the open ocean often called the Bermuda Triangle is a very real phenomenon that millions of people around the world struggle with. Netflix’s new mystery-horror series focuses on the ill-fated journey of The Kerberos, as it responds to a distress signal from The Prometheus; a vessel that had reportedly sunk several months earlier as it sailed across the Atlantic. However, the creators and the streaming platform have confirmed that 1899 is not based on a true story.
The official synopsis of 1899 reads, ‘A migrant steamship heads west to leave the old continent. The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, were united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on the open sea. What they will find on board, will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare.’
The plot of 1899 might be fictional but the concept of ‘Ghost Ships’ is sadly TRUE. In 1845, British Royal Navy Captain Sir John Franklin, along with 128 other sailors, attempted to chart the Northwest Passage on a dramatic voyage across the Arctic on HMS Erebus and HMS Terror.
Both ships became icebound only a few years into the expedition and were abandoned. The entire crew died from causes including starvation, hypothermia, and scurvy. Interestingly, the wreckage of HMS Erebus was found by a Canadian research team in 2014, with the wreck of HMS Terror located two years later in what is now the modern-day Nunavut.
