RIP Gufi Paintal: Mahabharat’s Shakuni Mama Passes Away At The Age Of 78

Gufi Paintal, who played the role of Shakuni Mama in the epic TV serial Mahabharat, passed away on Monday at the age of 78. 

A veteran actor, Gufi Paintal, who played the role of Shakuni Mama in the epic TV serial Mahabharat, passed away on Monday at the age of 78 after suffering from some health issues. He was admitted at a hospital in suburban Andheri. Unfortunately, he is no more; he breathed his last at the hospital around 9 p.m.

He wrote, “With profound grief, we announce the sad demise of our father, Mr. Gufi Paintal (Shakuni Mama). He passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by family. His final journey will begin from his house at 3:30 p.m. at Oshiwara Crematorium.

About Gufi Paintal:

He was born into a Sikh family in 1944 in Tarn Taran, Punjab. He is the brother of actor and comedian Kanwarjit Paintal. Gufu studied engineering but later followed the path of his younger brother, who took training at the Film and Television Institute of India. Gufi came to Mumbai in 1969 and started his career as a model. He also worked as an assistant director for movies.

Gufi Paintal rose to fame when he bagged the role of Shakuni Mama in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat. Mahabharat aired from 1988 to 1990, and Gufi became widely popular.
He then went on to work on TV shows like Kanoon, Om Namah Shivay, Akbar Birbal, Mrs. Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuein, etc. Gufi also played the role of Akshay Kumar’s Mama (maternal uncle) in his 1994 film Suhaag. Along with acting, he has also worked as a television director.
