“Golmaal” Was Made For Survival, Story Behind Rohit Shetty’s “Golmaal” Franchise

Neeraj Vora told him the story of a play which he had done in Marathi and Guajarati. And that was the story of “Golmaal”.

Rohit Shetty is a director who started giving credit to his entire team “Rohit Shetty & Team” and later many other filmmakers adopted it. Rohit is making headlines with his upcoming web series “Indian Police Force”. Just like the Marvel Universe, he is trying to build his own cop universe, and he has quite succeeded in it with movies like “Singham”, “Singham Returns”, “Simba”, “Suryavanshi” and the upcoming movie “Singham Again”. But he is famous for the hilarious comedy films he served to the audience through the “Golmaal” franchise. This film happened very unexpectedly and became a hit. But do you know the story behind it?

Rohit Shetty opened about his cinematic journey in the latest podcast with Bharti TV. There he told the entire ‘behind’ story of “Golmaal”. He said that “Golmaal” was made for survival but later became a cult. He also talked about how the “Golmaal” movie content has become meme material on Instagram.

Rohit Shetty’s first film “Zameen” was a flop, and therefore he decided to make a thriller with Ajay Devgn under the banner of “Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision”. A famous director and writer, Neeraj Vora, met him during that process. He called him and said, “Tere ko ek kahaani sunau?” Of course, how would he say no to such a renowned artist? Then Neeraj Vora told him the story of a play which he had done in Marathi and Guajarati. And that was the story of “Golmaal”. Rohit Shetty called it his fortune because it wasn’t his original talent. But whatever we have seen on screen is all Rohit’s diligence. He elaborated more on Golmaal. He said that Ajay Sir also gave him immense backing. But the whole aim of the movie was “Comedy film hai, thik thak chali jayegi, career set ho jayega. Woh hit hogayi, kabhi socha nahi tha. Woh banayi thi survival ke liye” (It’s a comedy film and will earn better, so it will help to set a career, but it became a hit. It was made for survival purposes). But after the release, it got a tremendous response from the audience and became a cult.

Ajay Devgn and Sharman Joshi’s roles were fixed, but they were not getting anyone for Madhav’s character and suddenly, producer Raj Mehta called him saying Munna Bhai’s shooting had been postponed and then Arshad Warsi joined the team. Even Lucky’s character was quite difficult, as there was no dialogue. Both Rohit and Tusshar were tense, how would it work? But later that character became a cult. And today there are 4 parts of this franchise we enjoy a lot: “Golmaal: Fun Unlimited”, “Golmaal Returns”, “Golmaal 3” and “Golmaal again”.
