Due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup was postponed by the football’s governing body. The tournament was scheduled to commence from November 2 – 21. The venues for the matches were at Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bhuvneshwar, Ahmedabad, and Navi Mumbai.

The tournament was to be completed between 16 teams, with automatic qualifiers for India as they were the host. It was to be a maiden appearance of India in the U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The decision was taken by the working group FIFA-Confederations, recently formed by the FIFA Council Bureau to tackle the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The working group recommended the Bureau of FIFA Council to “postpone the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup Panama/Costa Rica 2020 – originally scheduled for August/September 2020 – and the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup India 2020 – originally scheduled for November 2020.”

FIFA said in a statement, “New dates will be identified.”

Although the tournament itself is five months away but only the Asia qualifying event was held so far from which Japan and North Korea made the cut.

As for the women’s international calendar, it was decided “to postpone all international matches due to be played during the upcoming June 2020 window; and to include the new dates of the women’s Olympic Football Tournament in the match calendar.”
