Android 10 source code confirms Google Pixel 4 will have a 90Hz display

Google’s upcoming Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL smartphones are likely to come with screen with 90Hz refresh rate a new code found in Android 10 has revealed.

Google has officially launched the Android 10 smartphone. Now that one cat is out of the hat, we can focus on the other, that is the Google Pixel 4 smartphones. Last month a report indicated that the Pixel 3 successors could come with a screen with a higher refresh rate. And now another report has shed more light in this regard.

Folks at XDA Developers have discovered source code in Android 10 which confirms that the upcoming Pixel 4 smartphones will come with displays with 90Hz refresh rate. While one of these codes or commits as it is called talks about the implementation of an overlay that detects when a device is running at 60Hz vs 90Hz, the other one talks about adjusting the screen refresh rate based based on the content running on the device.

While that might not seem like a proof enough of the fact that Google is indeed planning to bring a screen with 90Hz refresh rate in Pixel 4 smartphones, as the tech giant makes changes to its ASOP code to accomodate new devices all the time, another commit found in the Android 10 code that has now been removed makes things a tad bit clear.

This code adds an enable/disable flag to toggle 90Hz display mode. The description available in the commit says that it is intended to be used temporarily until a better solution can be implemented. The report points out that since publishing the commit in question, Google has found a “solution” to this issue by adjusting the refresh rate of the screen based on the content playing on it, which in turn would require the phone to actively detect the kind of content — video, high-end graphics or images — being played on the screen.

Notably, 9To5 Google in a report last month had first suggested that Pixel 4 with come with a display with 90Hz refresh rate that would be called Smooth Display. And now we have more details in this regard which confirm the report.

Separately, the Google Pixel 4 is likely to feature a 5.7-inch OLED display with a 2,800mAh battery while Pixel 4 XL is likely to come with a 6.3-inch display and a bigger 3,700mAh battery. The two phones are likely to come with a dual rear camera setup consisting of a 12MP telephoto lens and a 16MP wide angle lens that will be housed in a squared shaped camera module. The two phones are expected to run on Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset and run on Android 10. They are expected to come with 6GB RAM and feature 64GB internal memory.
