Undeniably one of the most loved films to date, seldom do you find a movie where you are forced to laugh at every scene, “Andaz Apna Apna” somehow manages to do it as it still remains audiences’ favorite picks! Maker Rajkumar Santoshi talks about the much-awaited sequel of the same, read more to know.

How do you describe a hit movie? What are the parameters to judge the success of a film? Box office collection? Media coverage? Beautiful cinematography or a top-notch soundtrack? Well, for a great movie to be a great movie, it’s a combination of all these factors. It’s not difficult to find seasonal hit movies but some make a place in the audience’s hearts forever. One such is “Andaz Apna Apna”, a multi- starrer film with Aamir Khan and Salman Khan as the male antagonists and Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor as the female counterparts. The movie, considered to be one of the best films of its genre, had failed to create its magic at the box office. It was released back in November 1994, the two-hero film earned Rs. 7.09 crore against its 2.90 crore budget. The film initially was not a hit, but later in an interview with a daily in 2014, Aamir Khan had expressed his dejection as the film didn’t do well. Explaining the reason behind it, he had mentioned that the public had no idea about the film being released. “It was a big disaster. It was a washout. Kisi ne dekhi hi nahi film” he added. While the maker of the film Rajkumar Santoshi attributes it to the “lack of promotions” as one of the reasons.

The plot revolves around two broke conmen Amar and Prem (Salman and Aamir) who set out to woo a rich heiress (Raveena Tandon) in order to win her heart but instead, they run into a local gangster, Teja, who turns their lives upside down. In an inadvertent transition where two con men accidentally become the saviors of the heiress, the film indeed is a laughing riot packed with most epochal dialogues and catchy songs. Each dialogue and scene of this film has become iconic, subject to a number of funny memes on the internet. The movie birthed many entertaining characters like crime master Gogo or that of Robert or Bhalla whose popularity is unmatched. “Andaz Apna Apna” is a hilarious film. It is incredible, the funniest film on Indian screen ever” Salman says. There were rumors that made rounds though that the main leads Salman and Aamir didn’t share the best of the bond during the shooting and were in fact not even on talking terms which sounds rather absurd as their on-screen duo, Amar-Prem had set quite the benchmark for other two-hero films with their outstanding acting and comic delivery. “There were a lot of rumors that Aamir and Salman were not getting along with each other. On the contrary, they were helping each other a lot. They were very good on set” clarified Santoshi during an interview with Rajeev Masand.

A thought that baffles many is that the popular pair hasn’t made another appearance on the big screen together, despite the success of the movie. Even the director Rajkumar Santoshi aspired to work again with the “Dabangg” star sometime in the future and offer him a really “Challenging role”, one that he hasn’t played before. It was also reported that the maker Rajkumar was giving the idea of the sequel a second thought. “My script is ready, some final touches are needed, but it has to be with a new cast, which will happen a little later” he confirms. While it is rumored that Varun Dhawan and Ranveer Singh will supposedly be portraying the characters of ‘Amar-Prem’

in the sequel, nothing has been confirmed so far. Aamir Khan in a recent interview approved this saying they should “definitely do this”

As fans wait eagerly for the second installment of the film, it would be worth the wait to see if the sequel lives up to the expectation of the original movie. In the meantime, if you are one of those, living under the rock, who have committed “Galti se mistake” by not watching the movie yet, we suggest you do, ASAP, so the next time when someone says “suno suno duniya ke logon,” you’d readily reply with “sabse bada hai mister gogo!”
