Akshaye Khanna lauded "Taal" director Subhash Ghai, co-actors Aishwarya Rai and Anil Kapoor. He also explained why Taal is a musical film.

On the occasion of Akshaye Khanna’s 49th birthday, let’s reflect on his one of the commercial hits “Taal” directed by Subhash Ghai. Akshaye Khanna has played a variety of roles in various movies, like Dil Chahta Hai, Dahek, Deewangee, Hungama, Section 375, Drishyam 2 and many. But Taal was slightly different from all these movies as it was a big musical film related to music which have tracks of nearly 64 minutes. Before the release of the film, Akshaye Khann shared his experience of working in Mukta Arts’ film in an exclusive chat with Lehren.

Taal was released in 1999 starring Aishwarya Rai and Anil Kapoor alongside Akshaye Khanna. Talking about the story of the movie, Akshaye Khanna said, “Below Taal there is ‘beat of the passion’ that’s what it all about. It’s a love story, love triangle. It’s about two people’s Taal meeting.” He explained why the movie is a musical. The film doesn’t only have too many songs, but there are many scenes that have been treated musically. There is a great variety of music in the film; there is a lot of Indian Classical; there are a lot of western beats; there is symphony, slow songs, fast songs etc. Also, the characters of Aishwarya and Anil are closely inclined towards music, as Aishwarya is the daughter of a folk singer and Anil is the head of Music Entertainment Company.  There are a total of 12 tracks in the film which are composed by A.R. Rahman. Akshaye said that he personally felt Taal was A.R. Rahman’s best music. Even Anand Bakshi contributed a lot to the songs of the film by writing simple yet meaningful lyrics.

Akshaye Khanna later shed some light on his experience of working with Subhash Ghai. He lauded his director, saying “The whole world knows the kind of director he is. His success has been unprecedented. I think the reason for that is, apart from knowing your job and being a good director-director,  I think it’s his personality, his just the way he is, he is just a good human being, and he has grown, he’s not remained static. Every day he is learning and changing.” Akshaye said that this is what his success formula is. Watch this exclusive interview here for interesting ‘behind the camera’ stories of Taal.
