When Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya Refused To Pay Abu Salem But Sang Songs For Him, Don Said, ’Tumhare Itne Crore Rupaye Kam Ho Gaye’

Abhijeet's Unwavering Stance And His Willingness To Share His Art Instead Of Giving In To Fear Not Only Showcases His Strength

Renowned playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who reached the pinnacle of his career with numerous chart-topping Bollywood songs in the 90s, recently opened up about a chilling encounter with the underworld during a candid interview with Lehren. In a surprising turn of events, Abhijeet revealed that underworld don Abu Salem once demanded money from him, but the singer chose to stand firm and sing for him instead of succumbing to extortion.

Abhijeet recalled the incident, stating, “Main league mein nahi tha, main us type ka superstar nahi tha, magar chance toh liya tha Abu Salem ne. Phone karta tha, kabhi Pathak ke naam se phone karta tha, kabhi kisi aur naam se phone karta tha. Tu phir bolta tha, mobile tha. Abhi jaake bahar se is number pe phone karo, yeah Dubai ka number hai. Aap samajh gaye na, hum kaun bol rahe hain? Dubai se bol rahe hain. Mein kya karoon, mere utni aukaat nahi thi. Woh kya maang raha hai, mein usko han bhi karo ya na bhi karo, mere dono aukaat nahi thi. Maine kaha, mein nahi kar sakta. Kya karoge, goli maar do? Kya karoge, maro? Nahi de sakta tumko. Kya milega tumko? Tum producer unse lipte rahe ho, unse karo. Hum dhande mein nahi hain, hum gane ga rahe hain.”

In a remarkable display of conviction, Abhijeet stood his ground, refusing to comply with the extortion demand. This decision surprisingly pleased Abu Salem, who had an unexpected request. Abhijeet continued, ‘Tum yeh gana suna do, mein mic mein phone laga ke speaker mein sunaonga. Tu dhadkan ka gana gaya karta tha, tu woh hisab mein likta rehta tha. Tumhare itne kaam ho gaye, itne crore rupaye kam ho gaye us zamane mein. 90s mein itne crore maang raha tha, tu usmein se kam kar deta tha.'”

Abhijeet’s unwavering stance and his willingness to share his art instead of giving in to fear not only showcases his strength but also sheds light on the complex dynamics that often existed between the entertainment industry and the underworld during that era.
