On Monday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced a new One-Day International Super League to determine the qualification for the 2023 World Cup. The ODI Super League will begin this week.

The ODI match between England and Ireland in Southampton will be the inaugural match of the 13-nation league, with the 2023 World Cup hosts being India and the next seven highest-placed teams automatically will qualify for the tournament. The ICC’s 12 full-time members and the Netherlands will participate, with each side playing four home games and four away three-match series.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the cricketing activities across the globe got adversely affected. Pertaining to the on-going crisis, the T20 World Cup got postponed and also the start of the ODI Super League got delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2023 World Cup also has been pushed further to give ICC more time to schedule any games lost due to COVID-19.

ICC General Manager, Geoff Allardice said, “The decision last week to move the (50-over) World Cup back to late 2023 gives us more time to schedule any games lost due to COVID-19 and preserve the integrity of the qualification process, meaning it will be decided on the field of play, which is important.”

Under the previous qualification system for last year’s World Cup in England, the top eight teams in the ICC rankings were joined by the top two sides to make up the 10-team event from a qualifying tournament.

England’s ODI skipper Eoin Morgan said, “We’re looking forward to playing cricket again and to the ICC men’s World Cup Super League.” He further added, “Given the situation, it will be quite different to the last time we played at home when we lifted the World Cup at Lord’s, but it’s nice to be starting our journey for the next edition of the tournament.”

Due to the virus outbreak, Cricket came to a screeching halt in March and it returned early this month with England hosting West Indies in a three-Test series.
