Fun With Fertility
After Vicky Donor which hilariously told the tale of a sperm donor without slipping into sleaze, welcome to a similar world of adult humour.
It’s a brave world when a big-time hero walks sportingly into a role where he and his wife haven’t been able to produce a kid in six years and have to head to a fertility clinic.
The good news is that the baby problem of suave VarunBatra and hotshot columnist DeeptiBatrais kept frothy and quite naughty. Writer-director Raj Mehta and screenplay writer JyotiKapoor pack it with boudoir banter about sexual positions and fertile periods.Witty dialogues by Rishabh Sharma about ‘slip dicks’ and sperms referred to as swimmers, stay largely in the risque zone. But despite scenes like the one where Varun has to provide his sperm in a bottle, the hilarity doesn’t descend into obscenity.
The arrival of Honey and his wife Monika as the hearty Punjabi couple with the same Batra surname gives a much-needed surge of bhangraenergy.
The big goof-up over the Batra sperms by gynaecologistsDr Joshi and Dr Joshi, a husband and wife team of fertility experts, which would actually be a very serious legal issue, continues to be handled with the prevailing sense of fun. Especially in the way the two doctors peddle their clinic in an audio-visual with the punchline, ‘Hamarepaasekcheezmilegi – Good News.’
There are a few tiny stumbles. Thedesi and slightly unsophisticated Batraswho fall short in the English language, displaya larger heart than their urban counterparts. In comparison, Varun and Deeptiactually come off as pretty rude and unfeeling.Particularly Varun who takes a good while to come around.
Where the desperation to have a baby of one’s own is true to life, the film tends to be unwittingly insensitive to adopted children.
The music which thumps to the over-familiar Punjabi beat is also completely pedestrian.
However, fun times overtake all else and turn teary for just a short, effective spell. Until Honey Batra and his sanitiserfor anyone touching his baby, bring the smiles back.
KareenaKapoor looks gorgeous as Deepti. Akshay Kumar is courageous to have taken on the role of Varun who’s the unfeeling one in the quartet of main characters. DiljitDosanjh and KiaraAdvanias the slightly rough Punjabi couple bring in a lot of sunshine. And AdilHussain and Tisca Chopra as the doctor couple contribute well to the comedy of mixed sperms.
Verdict: For entertaining storytellingwith a touch of heart-tugging emotion, Good Newwz gets a 3.5* rating.
