Vijay Deverakonda Breaks Silence On Arjun Reddy Being Called Misogynistic

‘I empathise a character than judging’ Vijay Deverakonda on playing Arjun Reddy

The new episode of Koffee with Karan 7 featured Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Panday. The Telugu superstar is making his Bollywood debut in Liger, with that he also debuted for popular celebrity talk show Koffee with Karan. The chat show host Karan Johar welcomed Liger stars to the couch for some candid conversation. KJo questioned Vijay Deverakonda on his hit movie Arjun Reddy.

Vijay Deverakonda rise up to fame with his Telugu hit Arjun Reddy. After it was remade in Bollywood as Kabir Singh many called the movie misogynist. This film and its lead character were criticized by fans and critics as misogynistic and anti-feminist. While the Arjun Reddy actor was present on the show Karan picked up the ball hitting on the criticism surrounding the movie.

Karan asked Vijay about his take on playing Arjun Reddy. He said: “As an actor my job is to empathise with the character and not judge him. If I’m judging him, I can’t play him. Any role that’s bought to me, I try and empathise with the character and if I can, I take that role. If something about it is very conflicting and I don’t understand it, or I don’t agree with it, I won’t do it. So if I did Arjun Reddy, I empathise with him. I understood why he behaved the way he did and the relationship he had with Preeti.”

Sharing his thoughts on the film that was accused as misogynistic and anti-feminist VIjay said: “I didn’t find it misogynistic or anti-feministic or something. It seemed like two people who had a very unique relationship. That was their relationship and to them, it was love.”

Karan Johar then asked Vijay Deverakonda about the character being violent to his girlfriend and if that was okay. He replied “I am no one to say if it’s right or wrong but they did it and they had a happily ever after life. They had a kid. You see the movie ending with a kid. But I’m not saying nobody should have a problem with it. You should have a problem with him.”

Vijay then reacted to how the film could be triggering to someone. Karan Johar then asked Vijay Deverakonda about the character being violent to his girlfriend and if that was okay. “I am no one to say if it’s right or wrong but they did it and they had a happily ever after life. They had a kid. You see the movie ending with a kid. But I’m not saying nobody should have a problem with it. You should have a problem with him,” he said.

Moving forward Karan asked if he could ever be Arjun Reddy in real life. Vijay responded, “I would never raise my hand. If it ever reaches a point where I feel such anger towards a woman, I will walk out. It will never reach a point where it gets abusive in any nature. You don’t need that stress in life. If something is stressful, walk off.”

On the work front, Vijay Deverakonda is busy promoting his pan-India film Liger. The film also stars young talent Ananya Panday as the female lead. The action thriller sports drama marks Vijay’s Bollywood debut. The film is directed by Puri Jagannadh and produced by Karan Johar under Dharma Productions banners. It is scheduled for theatrical release on 25th August.
