Fans of both Tamil superstars- Ajith Kumar and Thalapathy Vijay were eagerly waiting for the release of their favourite star’s respective films- Thunivu and Varisu. As both films were set to arrive in cinemas on the same day, i.e 12 January, there was a major discussion among film enthusiasts and trade experts about which film is going to win this box office battle. Now the box office reports of the opening day of the both films are out and it seems both are going neck and neck at the moment at the Indian box office in spite of Varisu having a decent lead in their home state-Tamil Nadu.
As per trade website boxofficeindia.com Thinuva had a comfortable lead, as it grossed 16 crore nett in Tamil Nadu while Varisu grossed around 13.75 crore nett in Tamil Nadu. But Thalapathy Vijay’s Varisu is going neck and neck with Ajith’s Thunivu at Indian box office, as the all India numbers are 22 crore nett for Thunivu and 21.50 crore nett for Varisu.
Both films have received mixed response from critics and audience alike, so now it will be interesting to see which film ends up winning this box office battle, mainly because both films have an open ground at ticket window as there are no big releases in Tamil for next few weeks.
About Varisu: Helmed by Telugu director Vamshi Paidipally, his family mass entertainer features Thalapathy Vijay in the role of an abandoned son of a business tycoon, who has decided to part ways from his family and its empire. But some unforeseen circumstances force him to take over his father’s business empire. The rest of the film is about how he manages to keep his father’s business safe from many enemies. The film also features Rashmika Mandana as a female lead. Besides them, the film also boasts a stellar supporting cast, including R Sarath Kumar, Prakash Raj, Jayasudha, Khushbu, Srikanth, Shaam, Yogi Babu, and Sangeetha Krish.
About Thunivu: The action thriller, which has been directed by H Vinoth, and sees Ajith in a slightly negative role of a bank robber who has taken innocent citizens and bank employees as his hostage. But it seems he has some ulterior motives behind this criminal act. The film also stars Manju Warrior, Samuthirakani, John Kokken, Veeran, Ajay, and GM Sundar appear in crucial roles.
Both actors’ previous releases Beast (2022), and Valimai (2022) underperformed at the box office, hence there is a lot riding on the success of both new releases.
