Ponniyin Selvan Singer Dies At 49, His Sudden Death Shocks Everyone

Tamil singer Bamba Bakya passes away at 49. His last collaboration was with AR Rahman for Ponniyin Selvan.

Popular Tamil singer Bamba Bakya has passed away today. The death of the 49-year-old singer has sent shock waves in the Tamil industry. Bamba Bakya was best known for his collaborations with AR Rahman on multiple occasions. Very recently, he worked with AR Rahman for Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film Ponniyin Selvan: I which features Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai and Shobhita Dhulipala.

An official statement regarding his cause of death is yet to be issued. However, if the reports are to be believed, the Ponniyin Selvan singer died due to heart attack. He took his last breath in a hospital in Chennai. The Tamil industry is in shock after his sudden death. Several celebs including lyricist Vivek, and actors Karthi and Shanthanu Bhagyaraj have expressed their shock and grief on Twitter.

Lyricist Vivek wrote, “It’s shocking. A great singer is no more. Pullinangal will always resonate in our ears. Working with him in Kaalame n Simtangaran is a special experience. My thought goes out to his family and @arrahman sir.

Tamil actor Karthi tweeted, “Really saddened by the sudden demise of Bamba Bakiya. I pray that his family and friends have the strength to bear this huge loss. #RIPBambaBakiya”

Shanthanu Bhagyaraj tweeted, “Loved his voice. Gone too soon. #Rip #bambabakya anna”

AR Rahman’s daughter Khatija Rahman mourned Bamba Bakya’s demise and wrote in her Instagram story, ” Rest in peace brother. Can’t believe you’ve passed away. Such a wonderful person and musician “

For the unaware, Bamba Bakya’s real name was Bhakkiyaraj. When AR Rahman signed him to sing Pullinangal, the composer asked Bhakkiyaraj to sing in a voice similar to South African singer Bamba. As he successfully completed the challenge, he was referred to as Bamba Bakya.
