Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan: 1 has hit the screens today. It is a period action film with an ensemble cast of Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, and Shobhita Dhulipala amongst others. The film is set in the 10th century and is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel Ponniyin Selvan. Mani Ratnam tried making this film in the mid-1990s and early-2010s but was unsuccessful. However, he didn’t give up on his dream project and years later, he gathered a new cast and worked extensively on the script. The film has been released in theatres today, that is, 30th September and has opened to good reviews. Even the IMDb rating of Ponniyin Selvan 1 is quite impressive.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 is originally made in Tamil but has also been dubbed in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. It was originally intended to be a single film but Mani Ratnam eventually split into two parts. The film is also receiving praise for its music given by AR Rahman.
