Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan 1 has earned record-breaking numbers at the box office. The period drama film is set in the 10th century and is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel Ponniyin Selvan. It has an ensemble cast of Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, and Shobhita Dhulipala amongst others. Ponniyin Selvan 1 Box Collection On Day 1
Ponniyin Selvan 1 had the third-best opening for 2022 in Tamil Nadu after Valimai and Beast. The Tamil film is said to have earned Rs 25-27 crore in the state. Trade analyst Ramesh Bala tweeted, “PS1 takes a Day 1 opening of about ₹ 27 Crs Gross in TN.. This is the 3rd best opening for 2022 after #Valimai and #Beast.”
Analyst and columnist also confirmed the numbers as he wrote in a tweet, “PonniyinSelvan part 1 is off to a FANTASTIC start at the box office. The film has grossed ₹25.86 cr on Day 1 in the state. 3rd BIGGEST opener of the year.”
He further reported that PS 1 recorded a gross earning of Rs 78 crore on its opening day. He called it the “Biggest Kollywood opening of 2022 at the World wide box office.”
In Kerala, the film earned Rs 3.20 crore.
The film is expected to become major blockbuster by breaking all the records set by Kollywood so far with its box office collection in the first week of its release.
Meanwhile, Hindi film Vikram Vedha which clashed with PS 1 at the box office, has recorded merely Rs 10-11 crore. The opening day earnings are similar to this year’s flop films like Laal Singh Chaddha, Shamshera and Samrat Prithviraj.
