In a recent interview, Tamil star Suriya revealed something surprising about Tamil cinema – for over 20 years, there were hardly any women-led films. The industry, often seen as male-dominated, lacked stories centered on women. Suriya, known for his exceptional film choices and dedication, decided to change this by starting his own production company, 2D Entertainment with a focus on promoting women-centric films. This shift came much later, making Suriya one of the first to support such narratives in Tamil cinema.
Unlike many others who start production companies for business, Suriya had a different idea. In an interview with Mashable India, he explained, “To do movies which I like. Sometimes, I am not able to do films which I really want to.” He noticed that for nearly two decades, there were no women-led stories in Tamil cinema. This led him to launch 2D Entertainment which he named after his children Diya and Dev. The production house began creating films that focused on women’s experiences, giving Tamil actresses the chance to play strong, lead roles.
Since its start, 2D Entertainment has brought women’s stories to the forefront. Suriya’s wife, actress Jyothika, starred in several of these movies, highlighting women’s challenges and victories. Some of their popular films include 36 Vayadhinile, Magalir Mattum, Jackpot, Ponmagal Vandhal, Udanpirappe and more. Suriya’s efforts have had a big impact, creating more space for women-led films, something that was missing in Tamil cinema until Suriya stepped in.

Suriya shared that he wanted to avoid repeating similar storylines. “Women are doing so much more than just fighting societal expectations,” he said, stressing the need for a variety of stories that capture different sides of women’s lives.
Thanks to 2D Entertainment’s success, other filmmakers in Tamil cinema are now exploring women-centric themes. Over the past decade, more films have focused on women’s stories, giving audiences fresh perspectives and addressing relevant issues. This is a big change for Tamil cinema, proving that one person’s vision can inspire an industry-wide shift.
As Suriya gears up for the November 14 release of his new movie Kanguva, fans are excited to see how he continues to champion meaningful stories. Through his work, Suriya has shown that his commitment to strong storytelling started with redefining women’s roles in Tamil cinema.
